AUSTIN STONE CHURCH

The Austin Stone story team was the most inspirational story share that we discovered for our project. It was the first that easily presented the four different formats fo video, photo, audio or written. Their team was easy to contact. Their artful yet relaxed approach to screening stories was encouraging.

BALTIMORE STUDY OF

SENIORS WHO VOLUNTEER

A study by the Experience Corps Baltimore offers insights to successful engagement and retention of older volunteers in public schools (Martinez, 2012). Examining the volunteer characteristics, a five-stage screening process of a diverse group of senior volunteers that have remained in the tutoring program for at least one year is the model:

“I am a volunteer reader in our elementary school; I participate in school board meetings to advocate for reforms that improve literacy education. United Way's current goal is to “cut the number of high school dropouts in half by 2018, recruiting one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors over the next three years.” 

THE VALUE OF A VOLUNTEER

Christine Ritch of the Girl Scouts shares that “repeat volunteers who understand the organization can be good spokespeople in the community about what we do. Also, once volunteers know who we are and have had great volunteer experiences, they will have the basis and the information on how to support the council financially. This builds a cycle of volunteerism for our organization.”
